Our House Today

Casa “El Molino” is located in the village of Tobed, in the Iberian Mountains, one hour away from Zaragoza. With a total area of more than 1,100 m2, it consists of five floors in several buildings, constructed in a century-old house and on top of an old mill and winery, which retain their original stone, brick and adobe walls (up to 1 m thick), as well as the original wooden beams. The floors are made of terracotta tiles and rustic stoneware, except for some bedrooms which have wooden flooring. The exterior is paved with natural stone.

As complementary buildings, we have a garage, a greenhouse, an outdoor games room and an underground cellar of about 60 m2. Outside, there are various species of fruit trees (plum, cherry, peach, apple, pear, fig, persimmon, medlar, hazelnut and walnut trees). Visitors to the house in summer have free access to the municipal swimming pool, 100 metres far from the house.
The estate consists of three dwellings and an activity area that can be rented together or separately, as well as a large garden area with large trees.

ABOUT US

History

The estate was founded at the end of the 19th century by the great-great-grandfather of the current owner, Gregorio Salanova, a hyperactive man who managed to build a large house, a winery and olive oil press. After his death. all the extractive activities on the estate gradually disappeared, The winery and oil press finally ceased to be run and the metal parts were sold for scrap, with the exception of the hydraulic press, a very heavy piece of solid iron embedded in the ground, which the buyers were unable to remove. This iron press had to be extracted by the owner’s father, who dug a large hole around it to free the entire base, and then moved it to its current location by pulling it with a large tractor and supporting it on wooden beams. It is currently used as a support for the garden fountain. The basins where oil and water ended up after pressing are underground in the warehouse, and “los infiernos” (the hells), the final destination for dirty water, has been covered and transformed into a greenhouse for the rural house. The farm still has the metal containers used to transport the oil.

The transformation

In the 1990s, the final heir to the estate, Juan Salanova, an English teacher based in Zaragoza, decided to transform the estate into a second family residence, acquiring the adjacent property, which was a bulk wine cellar, bringing the total area to over 1,000 m².

During the conversion process, every effort was made to preserve as many original features as possible, such as the Arabic tile roofs, stone and rammed earth walls, solid brick pillars and original wooden beams. Two wine presses were also converted into a spacious bathroom, and the olive store is now the dining room and kitchen of the main house. The eaves of the two façades and some of the rooms in the rural house feature original Modernist-era décor, with period furniture used wherever possible. A yoga room with real wooden flooring was also installed in the old barn.

The house currently consists of four units, adapting to different groups of tenants, and also has a private flat for the owner.

From the outset, the use of the estate as a rural house has allowed it to accommodate a wide variety of groups of clients: yoga and meditation groups, family parties and surprise parties, holiday weeks for domestic and foreign guests, family reunions bringing together people from different parts of the country, English or botany immersion courses, groups of workers, occasional accommodation for couples, summer university courses in botany immersion and Mudejar art, etc.

Casa El Molino remains open all year round, enjoying hosting any person or group who decides to stay in our land.
